Everything for a sleeper retaining wall

Concrete sleeper walls are the most popular way to retain a slope on the Surf Coast. They won't rot or attract termites like timber, and they suit everything from a low garden bed in Jan Juc to a cut-and-fill house site in Armstrong Creek or Mount Duneed. We stock the sleepers, steel, drainage and concrete in one yard, and we can put it all on site with our crane truck.

What goes into the wall

  • Concrete sleepers to form the face of the wall.
  • Steel posts, concreted into post holes, to hold the sleepers. Ask us what suits your wall height and sleeper length.
  • Concrete to set the posts. Rapid set bags save mixing on small jobs.
  • Socked agi pipe along the base of the wall to drain water from behind it.
  • Black plastic behind the sleepers to keep moisture off the face.
  • Storm pipe and fittings to carry the agi water to a legal point of discharge.

How many sleepers do I need?

Divide the wall length by the sleeper length to get sleepers per row, then divide the wall height by the sleeper height to get the number of rows. Multiply the two, and allow for any below-ground row your design calls for.

Example: a wall 12m long and 1m high, using 2.4m sleepers that are 200mm high.

12m ÷ 2.4m = 5 sleepers per row. 1m ÷ 0.2m = 5 rows. 5 × 5 = 25 sleepers, with 6 posts (one at each end and one at every joint).

Permits and engineering

Depending on its height, what it's holding back and how close it is to a boundary or building, a retaining wall may need a building permit and an engineer's design. Check with Surf Coast Shire or the City of Greater Geelong before you build, and bring us your engineer's drawings so we can supply to spec.

Common questions

Do you deliver sleepers to site?
Yes. Our crane truck can lift sleepers and steel over fences and onto site, subject to access. We deliver across the Surf Coast, Geelong, Armstrong Creek and the Bellarine. See delivery areas.
Why use concrete sleepers instead of timber?
Concrete sleepers don't rot, split or get eaten by termites, so they last far longer in the ground than treated pine and need no maintenance.
Do I need drainage behind a sleeper wall?
Almost always. Water trapped behind a wall adds pressure and is one of the most common reasons walls lean or fail. Socked agi pipe at the base, backfilled with drainage gravel, gives it a way out.
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall?
It depends on the wall's height, what it's retaining and where it is. Check with Surf Coast Shire or the City of Greater Geelong, and use an engineer's design where one is required.
